Many of us, at least those in the older generations, know the peculiar Baron of Parkano and are probably familiar with the story of Mekes and other sawmills. Parkano has become known as a centre of forest industry, but the metal industry has overtaken it in recent years. All kinds of changes have taken place in the town’s business life but also the town’s centre over the decades. As new has replaced old, even the town’s commercial centre has slowly shifted elsewhere.
Do you know who Pankin Pönkka or Nappi-Liisa were? And where in downtown Parkano Moskova and Musta Pörssi used to be? What was Mörkösatsi, and where could you get it from? You will find out the answers to these questions on a local heritage walk that begins from the current town hall and ends at the church hill in Kuttikallio. Along the way, the guide will tell you about the development of downtown Parkano and well-known Parkano residents from the 1930s to the present day.
You now have a great opportunity to have an expert tour guide for your next visit to Parkano. PhD Hannu Raitio has been an active member of the local history society since 1977, also acting as the chairman of Parkano’s travel association and a regional guide.
